You just need to be adamant and explain that you don't want X-rays. I've been going to the same guy for 37 years and they know I don't want X-Rays so I don't get them!

You don't need X-Rays to clean teeth. Be diplomatic and explain that 'you understand they have your best interests at heart but humor me.' It works.
