My mom is in the hospital, one of the discs in her back completely
disintegrated, where the new tumor was found back in January.
Fragments of the disintegrated disc are pushing on the spinal cord,
which is damaged about 75%, they think. She is having an operation
as soon as they can get the part and the surgical team together,
probably tomorrow. She can't use one of her arms and has been in
great pain, all the while saying she wasn't and playing golf. Now
they have her on morphine and she is not in as much pain but wants to
move around. The surgeon has been very straightforward about if she
falls, she will be paralyzed completely. Dad is having a tough time,
and is driving back and forth from where they live to here in Austin
where the hospital is. He has a weak heart, the pacemaker paces him
100% of the time, and they haven't gotten him a chair he can nap in,
so he is really tired and really upset, but trying not to show it.
It has to be sad for him to go home alone every night, and he's
eating at the golf clubhouse (they live on a golf course) instead of
making himself any food.
The strange thing is that for the past 3 or 4 months I've had
terrible back pain, so bad that my dr. has referred me to a spinal
degeneration specialist. When they got mom on the morphine, it was
the first day in months my back didn't hurt. Does that seem odd?
That I would be feeling her pain? Even this morning, when I got up
my back was killing me and then after 7am (when they give her a dose
of painkiller) my back stopped hurting so much.
Anyway, I have cried until I can cry no more and am believing that
the operation will be successful and that they won't find any more
cancer on the discs around the one that is gone. Please keep my
family, especially mom and dad, in your thoughts and prayers this
week.
