Contributing cause? Yes.............the absolute cause? No.
For something to be considered a 'cause' it must be the reason the end result happens all the time. We know people that smoke, eat poorly, and yet never develop cancer in their life while others do. Then we have the person that eats 'well' according to our standards and they develop cancer, the word develop probably a good way to explain this curse. Vegetarians develop cancer.
Meat eaters and non-meat eaters develop cancer and perhaps the meat-eater victim has also added a number of other factors that have a 'causal' relationship.
I refer to J.H. Tilden, M.D. one that was mentioned in the originating post because I have Tilden's book, 'Toxemia Explained'. Tilden does subscribe to the Metabolic cause of disease, something which is barely touched upon in Alternative circles. Think on the following:
Every day of our existence the body replaces dying cells, the normal process of life, and during this process must effectively eliminate the virulent dead residue of once live cells. I believe it was Tilden that stated, "if one were to inject a hypodermic needle's worth of this toxin into a horse it would drop dead immediately. Whether or not that would happen, he makes the point and I accept it. Our body is a marvelous machine, able to eliminate this via any number of ways........sweat, urination, defecation, and when something hinders this elimination and the body senses danger from an overload of toxins, we get heroic attempts at elimination. We get boils, fevers, runny noses and coughs and often the heaves or diarrhea. Some call this being sick............the Tildens and other practitioners call this getting well. What does the allopathic system do? It usually tries to stop these heroic efforts and we seem to 'get well'..........or do we? What we have successfully done was to stop seeing the symptoms of Toxic overload.
John H. Tilden and Herbert Shelton just two among many, believed that this is the process ultimately leading to cancer. Irritation, inflammation, indurations..................followed by cancer. It is generally not an overnight development and I can understand what these giants in Natural Healing were driving at.
They gave a name to all of the above and they called what we do daily, including the stress factor which hinders elimination as, 'Enervating events'. So, it isn't the cigarette, the booze, the meat, the candy, the stress..............it's all of them because they are all enervating and help in stopping efficient elimination while adding their own toxins to the already overloaded organism we live in. It's the same thing with the mistaken religion of The Germ Theory.
If a germ doesn't always cause a disease, it must then be only a secondary cause (there's that word again) because there have been experiments where a germ/virus has been introduced into a host and the disease did not result. There is another factor...............the immune system the body. It is the body that reacts to things introduced into it, not the other way around. Try giving a laxative to a cadaver. Who would, but you get the point.
Sorry for the long read but it is designed to make us think about what some giants of the past believed and which seems to be reasonable.
