In vitro: Cells such as cancer cells are grown in culture media that
maximize their growth to their full potential. Thus virtually any
and every other chemical with biological activity is going to inhibit growth.
In vivo: Not only are animal models a poor reflection of human
biology and of the wide variation in the human environmental and
dietary experience, the tumors that are grown do not behave like
wild-type cancers that plague both humans and animals.
As to xanthohumol making "unhealthy compounds" more water
soluble, we have a whole system of P-450 oxygenases that do exactly
that. The answer to cancer is not in drinking more beer.
We are indoctrinated into thinking that the purpose, the obvious
purpose, of cancer research is to find a "cure" for cancer. If space
alien anthropologists were to study our ways, they might conclude
that cancer is our God -- we worship it, nurture it, fear it, and
sacrifice for it. It might never cross their minds that cancer is
something that we are trying to prevent and cure.
