More likely there is a magnatron tube under the table. No way is
there enough power from a cell phone (3 watts max) to heat a corn
kernel enough to pop. A magnetron tube, the heart of all microwave
ovens range from about 400 to 1100 watts and still it takes a long
time before kernals start to pop after the oven is turned on. Some
cell phones operate in the same frequency range as do microwave ovens
at about 2450 Mhz. It is the moisture content of what ever you are
trying to cook that allows for the conversion of RF energy into heat.
Microwave ovens are tuned to the resonant frequency of water
molecules. The vibration set up in sympathy to the physical size of
the water molecule is a violent friction just like rubbing your hands
together to heat by friction.

These ovens are illegal in Russia and should be illegal everywhere.
They are very dangerous because the destroy all of the enzymes in
food which our bodies require to remain healthy. I only use mine to
heat water for tea or coffee.
