Here's what you ended with: "please correct me if I am wrong here -- you've given yourself a better chance of survival". You wrote that along with a lot of 'ifs' regarding getting a Mammogram.
One question: How do you feel about the risk of 'seeding' cancer cells because of getting a Mammogram?
If you truly believe that the Mammogram gives one the 'early' detection needed for survival then perhaps my question is meaningless. With all of the 'ifs' you threw in your post, my response seems to be in defense of NOT getting a Mammogram. Trust me, it is not but it is an attempt at getting you to think deeply. Again, that is yours or anyone else's choice and one should make that decision knowing all of the risks and implied benefits. I say 'implied' because there is so much controversy over Mammography.
When I learned that a biopsy of my Prostate could 'seed' cancer cells I advised my Urologist that I would not undertake that effort. He admitted that seeding is a possibility but that he takes extra measures to minimize that risk. Note the use of 'minimize'. To me the risk of seeding is greater than the benefit of knowing because, and he admitted this too, even with a biopsy the cancer can be missed.
One of the things we human beings do on a regular basis is bring up enough questions until we get the answer we are looking for then we take action. I believe that because..............I do it all the time!
