of 2007 --following the news of his recurrence-- I sent him a long
letter urging him to turn to alternative medicine. He sought me out
at our Davidson College Reunion a few weeks later. We did speak for a
bit & he acknowledged that diet & exercise would have a role to play
in his recovery. In the funeral announcement, I saw that memorial
contributions could be made to Dana Farber. I surmised from that that
he probably never did avail himself of alternative medicine's
offerings. My guess is that his doctors claimed that there had been
important breakthroughs in the treatment of colon cancer since his mom
died of the same disease over 35 years ago. I think Tony's family
would unquestionably admit that he died from his cancer. If some
unscrupulous medical researcher wants to twist that into death from
liver failure, for example, that does not reflect on Tony. Sadly, he
never even made it five years from his February 2005 diagnosis -- so
he will not be counted as having been "cured" or a five-year survivor.
Tony was a great guy & one who --like many-- probably put all his
eggs in the allopathic medicine basket.
