Yesterday, Jim was placed on "moderate status." That does NOT mean he
was removed from the list. It means that his messages will be held in
pending mode until they can be read by a moderator before going on
the list for the group to read.
Previously, he was free to post directly to the list without anyone
checking what he had written. However, other members of the group
wrote me to complain about his language. Also, I had received
complaints a month ago about his harsh comments toward other members.
I wrote to him then to suggest that he follow our rule of courtesy
when posting. So, he had one reminder at that time.
I would prefer to not have to moderate any messages. I and others
volunteer our time to moderate this list so that it runs smoothly.
The group has only four simple rules. 1] Be considerate, 2] Delete
all but one previous message, 3] Avoid off-topic subjects [such as
politics] and 4] No soliciting.
I put people on moderate status only when others complain to me. It
means their messages may be delayed a while before posting. However,
they can still read all messages and can send a reply or a question.
No one is removed from the group without being sent several letters
over many months in an effort to help them to stay within our
guidelines of common courtesy, etc. It's very rare that anyone is
asked to leave or is removed from the group. That occurs only after
many complaints from other members over a long period of time. A
couple of those people were writing rude emails to others off-list.
Receiving that kind of mail is very stressful for many members.
I also want to mention that a few people are on moderate status only
because their messages arrive with Yahoo ads included or with some
kind of computer glitch that makes them hard to read. And, new
members are on moderate status for a period of time. Again, 'moderate
status' simply means that a moderator reads the message first before
it is posted to the group. If necessary the message is made easier to
read by removing computer-added wording or symbols, etc.
Those of us who volunteer our time to moderate this list hope to
create a place where all members can find help and not have to feel
stressed by other members or by us. It's a delicate balance.
