There are many other ways to EXPERIENCE reality, but we are sorely
limited in methods of mapping it for communication and
teaching. Some methods such as math can be exquisitely beautiful and
accurate -- for example the addition of divergent harmonic series is
one of the best ways that I can analyze diffuse metastasis. Its
ability to predict growth lays the groundwork for smart clinical thinking.
Nothing I say is disparaging although it might be a cause of
despair. But remember that one person's despair is another's source
of elation. For me being right is a source of ennui and despair. I
learn most from cases that I thought I would lose, but I won, and
from cases that I thought I was going win, but I lost. It is only
when we welcome the surprise of being wrong can we forge ahead.
Authority always believes (or pretends to believe) that the
foundation for its doctrines is solid. This is the very weakest
stance that one can take. It is far stronger (and more productive)
to believe that everything you think you know is somehow
suspect. This does not mean you reject knowledge imparted by those
who have gone before you. It does mean that you are living a lie if
you don't ruthlessly examine the quality of all your thinking. My
cancer seminars begin with a two-hour discourse on epistemology. I
try to make it very interesting, but then maybe I'm fooling myself.
