[cancercured] Re: For Cheryl re sunlight

Hi Ellen,
There is a good explanation in Wikipedia about UV light and vitamin
D: "Ordinary window glass passes about 90% of the light above 350 nm,
but blocks over 90% of the light below 300 nm." UVB (320-280 nm) is
the wavelength responsible for producing vitamin D in the skin.
Ordinary glass blocks most of the UVB rays so skin can not produce an
adequate amount of vitamin D if the sun's rays are shining through it.

So, for those people who do not have, or can not afford a vitamin D
lamp and would like to get their vitamin D naturally, open the window
about noon so the sun's rays can shine directly on the skin. Even with
the temperature in the 20's, as long as the sun is shining brightly
(and there is not a blast of cold wind blowing directly into the
window), you should be able to stay comfortably warm AND produce
adequate natural vitamin D within about a half hour. (I know it is
working because my skin is not nearly as white as it would be at this
time of the year.)

Cheryl, near Frederick, MD

PS In the more northern parts of the US, this will not work as well as
where I am (about 38 degree latitude) because in the middle of the
winter, the sun around noon is even lower in the sky and its rays are
shining through even more of the earth's atmosphere so more UVB is
absorbed before it can reach the skin.
