I am so GLAD when I see something in the mainstream media about the
need to health care change! Nearly all of what I usually see is the
same old idea that takes for granted that the USA has a fine health
care system, with the only problem being that we have to provide
insurance to more people so they can benefit from our wonderful health
care system.
There was a radio talk show host on KDKA last night who was also a
breath of fresh air. He was raising the question of whether he, as
someone who takes care of his health, should have to pay into Medicare
to cover the health care costs of someone who does little to nothing to
take care of their health.
An outraged listener called in and asked, "Who are YOU to say what I
can and can't do with my life?!"
The talk show host replied, "I am not saying anything about what you
can and can't do with your life. All I'm saying is that if you live a
self-destructive life, I don't want the money I earn to pay for
Medicare for you. You want the benefit of Medicare, at least show me
that you're working on making yourself healthier."
Some might think the talk show host's position a bit harsh, but AT
LEAST the guy was getting some people to THINK and TALK about
responsibility and personal health!
