I'm still working out what is the best preventative diet to ward off cancer, or rather not what is the "best" (as though I could definitely know that) but what I might be able to manage!
As background,my mother died of breast cancer (which she got when she was 53) and my sister has some calcification in her breast tissue (though no cancer). I'm 44.
I've been reading Bill Henderson's book called Cancer-free. Perhaps some of you know it. In it, he gives 5 "no-no's". They are Sugar, Processed food, Animal protein (you can have a piece of chicken or fish/week), Dairy, Gluten.
If you don't actually have cancer at the moment, you can relax a little on the dairy, according to Bill.
I've been eating FOCC by the recipe recommended by the experts on that (Sandra Olsen, for eg) and the only gluten I've had is the little bit in spelt crackers. However, I really miss eating bread. I "cheated" today and had my FOCC in a seeded sandwich and it was
DELICIOUS. FOCC on its own or with fruit is not a great favourite of mine, though I eat it anyway. I've put it in salad and that's okay, but you get a bit tired of it. In a sandwich is it fab. Makes me think of cream cheese.
So, I am wondering what others on this list think of gluten. I wouldn't mind buying or making gluten free bread but if you buy it you will usually find it is full of junk and completely devoid of nutrition (and often hard as rock, though tolerable if toasted). If you make it...well, much the same, really. It is all right straight out of the oven, but that's it.
Thanks so much for sharing your opinions -- even if they directly contradict anything I'm leaning towards, please send them anyway as I am working all this out still!
