> Interesting info. It seems like you are saying that after one exhales and before one inhales is when one starts holding the breath. Is that right? I know this is a different system than yogic breathing but why do they just do it until the first voluntary push of the diaphragm? Yogic breathing is often going past that.

This is not the system. This is just a test from his
system.
This Soviet doctor was the manager of the respiratory
lab for first spaceship missions and his research was
classified for over 30 years. He had best equipment
and found that this breath holding time test (after
exhale, with no stress or pushing) correlates with
body oxygenation. When we push ourself, the will power
plays its role.
The goal of the method he developed was to improve
oxygenation, naturally, using diet, exercise, posture.
etc.
He also found that sick cancer patients do not have
automatic pause in their unconscious breathing
pattern: they breathe heavily 24/7: in-out, in-out and
they forcefully exhale ait out. Wheras healthy people
take small inhales, relax, exhale, and have a period
of no breathing (automatic pause) even at night during
sleep.
