I absolutely agree(see my post to Comdyne)that it is of utmost
importance to concentrate as much effort as possible on prevention.
I believe the relationship between genes and cancer needs to be
explored in depth, but not as just another way of avoiding doing the
very best job possible of identifying and eliminating the real causes
of cancer.
One horrific phenomenon, in my opinion, that is occurring due to over-
emphasis on genes as a cause of cancer is that of young women with
healthy breasts having mastectomies "in order to avoid getting breast
cancer because their mother got breast cancer." It appears to me that
a far better avenue for such women would be to examine all facets of
their mother's behavior and to add and subtract that which they deem
beneficial or detrimental, as the case might be.
Best of health,
Elliot
