Yes, there are small amounts of cyanide in the apricot kernels. Here is
a link about laetrile, where it says the cyanide in laetrile is bound
and cannot hurt normal cells. I do not suppose that applies to the raw
kernels.
However, you supposition about eating a cup of apricot kernels at any
one sitting is, in my experience, implausible, due to the extraordinary
bitterness of the kernels. I think most people would be doing great if
they could eat even 2 or 3 individual kernels at a time.
The limitation, from my experience, is definitely due to bitterness
rather than to number of kernels.
