The relative who wrote back with that flippant answer about "natural
stuff is crap" and about "most dis-eases having a genetic basis" is
miseducated.
Does he really believe that UNnatural is better than natural? I think
when people say "natural is ridiculous" they say it because it
appears to be a daunting and depriving thing for them to change the
way they eat and drink. To be sure, it is not an easy thing to
accomplish. It does take much effort and plenty of will power. But
such people would be far more honest to admit that natural naturally
has to be better and that they simply do not want to make, or are not
yet ready to make, the effort to change.
He is wrong in saying "most diseases have a genetic basis." That is a
myth that allows the food industry to keep manufacturing unhealthful,
processed foods and beverages and the public to keep ingesting them.
Even for dis-eases that do have a genetic basis, there is good
evidence,(read Matthias Rath, T. Colin Campbell and others), which
shows genetically-caused dis-eases can be prevented or at least kept
at bay for many years by eating and drinking properly, by getting
regular exercise, fresh air sunshine, good sleep, and by otherwise
taking care of oneself. Rath writes, in his book, "Eradicating Heart
Dis-ease," --- "Genetics may load the gun, but lifestyle pulls the
trigger."
Of the 5 dis-eases referenced that are more common than breast
cancer, the incidence of 3 of them, including the 2 most common ones
that head the list, is very significantly affected by lifestyle, with
a natural, healthful lifestyle mitigating demonstrably against the
development of those dis-eases. Living naturally and healthfully
could have a significant effect on the respiratory conditions, as
well, as doing so would keep one's immune system working more
efficiently.
Of the other 5 dis-eases, only accidents can be said to have no
correlation to living naturally and healthfully, though even there it
could be said that living naturally and healthfully help one maintain
a clearer mind and a more agile body that could help one keep from
having some of the accidents less healthful people might have.
In summary, I believe someone who sneers at "natural" and claims most
dis-eases have a genetic basis is doing so to defend the inertia they
experience whenever they think about what they need to do to become
truly healthy. Either that or he has some big stake in the junk food
industry or the mainstream "dis-ease care" industry.
Best wishes and best of health,
Elliot
